🌟COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT🌟
Meet Melissa Ruiz! She’s been part of the Movement community since she started climbing in 2018. That’s also the year she began competing in paraclimbing! In September, Melissa took gold🥇at the IFSC Para Climbing World Championships in Seoul in the RP1 category. Learn more about @mind_over_melissa below👇 and be sure to say hi if you see her training in the gym!
Did you choose climbing or did climbing choose you?
“Climbing didn’t choose me, I chose it. It’s such a leg-heavy sport that it doesn’t really make sense that I do it given the lower body disability, but here we are.”
What is something you wish the climbing community knew about paraclimbing?
“I wish the climbing community knew how strong paraclimbers are, and also how much fun we can be. We love making jokes and goofing around just like everyone else does. If anything, our humor is more shocking than our ability to climb. So join us! Don’t be afraid to make jokes and goof around with us.”
Congratulations on your most recent gold medal win at the IFS World Championships! Tell us about it:
“My recent World Championship Competition went pretty well! I came home with my first ever World Championship gold, despite all the trouble my legs were giving me. At my first Championship comp I’d gotten 12th, so this win means a lot to me.”
What’s next for you? Any dream projects?
“The next and last comp of the season is the World Cup in Laval, France. I’m hoping to top at least one of the comp routes while I’m there (and for another gold). After that I’ll be turning my attention back to outdoor climbing. Next May, I’m planning to lead up a route on El Cap. If I complete it, I’ll be the first person with Cerebral Palsy to lead up El Cap at all (everyone else jumared their way up). That, along with a route in Rumney called ‘Predator,’ are my dream projects.”

Say hey to your Harlem head setter 👋 Sebi has been setting bangers at Harlem since 2023. Not only does he run the show here at Harlem, but he’s also the head setter at @movementvalhalla! Double the gyms, double the 🔥 sets! Read below to learn more about him and his setting career 👇
1. How did you begin setting?
I’ve been setting since 2017. To start setting, I basically had to convince the Head Routesetter at my old gym over a period of a year and a half that I would be a valuable contribution to the team. I’ve now been the Head Setter at Movement Harlem for two years!
2. Have you had any memorable career highlights or routes you’ve set?
Chiefing Uptown Showdown, my first premier-level bouldering competition, last April was definitely a standout.
3. Favorite outdoor climbing spot?
I love sport climbing in Rumney, NH!
4. What are you doing when you’re not climbing?
It doesn’t happen often but when I’m not climbing, I try to relax at home or at the park. Living in NYC has taught me to make an effort to slow things down and just chill out. Oh! and baking lots of bread!

another EPIC competition for the books! 🤩🎉
thanks to everyone who competed or spectated in this year’s Lead Flash Comp at LIC! It’s always a treat to see all the insane climbers in the city and have our community come out to cheer them on 🫶
+ a huge shoutout to our community partners for making our comp that much more epic @rijleept @climbing.rehab @navawellnessnyc @citiestocrags 🔥
