🤩 Meet Nick @ndastreetart the artist behind THE mural at Fishtown!
Nick D’Auria (NDA) is a public artist based in Philadelphia. Although his background is in printmaking and illustration, he is best known for his colorful murals and large-scale public art. By combining surrealism, comic humor, playful mark making and real-life observations, NDA seeks to shine a light on the human condition while making his audience laugh. His bright and expressive work can be seen in multiple U.S. cities and around the world from Mexico to Norway. Working in public, NDA has developed a deep commitment to including the community in the creative process. While he has a distinct style, he prioritizes community engagement and strives to work with people in the area in different ways to engage them in the co-creation of each artwork whenever possible.
You can find his work across the US; including New York, Philadelphia, Newark, Portland, Reno, and Miami. He has been an artist in residence at Staufferstadt in Strasburg, VA and the Sunnhordland Folkehogskule Teaching Residency in Norway.
“One of the things I’ve noticed at rock climbing gyms is the element of problem solving and play that goes into each climb. Each route is a puzzle that requires creativity and ingenuity to solve–and then it’s on to the next one. That’s the same feeling I get when planning out any mural project.
I wanted to celebrate that sense of whimsy in this design. By creating a series of overlapping elements that don’t always follow logical rules, my goal was to make a piece that speaks to that playful spirit while also being a bit of a puzzle itself. The natural elements throughout—curves and mountain-like forms—create a sense of motion, and the colors harmonize with the climbing wall to create a cohesive piece that fosters creativity in the space.”
