Meet your Gowanus head setter 🤠Chris has been setting at Gowanus since the gym opened in 2022 and is one of the minds behind the movement you love. Get to know him and his setting career below 👇
1. How did you begin setting?
I started setting back when I worked at First Ascent in Chicago. I’d done just about everything at the gym. I worked front desk, youth programs, even helped with construction, and till I eventually got a shot at setting. Once I started, I was hooked. Setting was the right mix of creativity, problem-solving, and fitness.
2.Favorite move to set?
Something balance-y.
3. Have you had any memorable career highlights or routes you’ve set?
In 2025, we set the Grey Wall zone at Gowanus as a kind of curated history of routesetting. Each section represented a different era or style: one was hyper-futuristic with maximalist features and overlapping holds; right next to it was a “moon board” or 90’s-style wall that was a sea of one-handed crimps. Another zone was themed around circles, and one more had a big stacked-volume feature. It was a cool mix of eras and aesthetics all living on the same wall. I was really happy with how it turned out. (anyone remember this set 👀)
4. Favorite place to climb outside?
Horse Pens 40 in Alabama.
5. What are you doing when you’re not climbing?
Cooking and exploring new food spots around the city. I’m a pretty adventurous eater, so I’m always on the lookout for something I haven’t tried before.
