outdoor development

If the outdoors is calling and you must go, then this series is for you!

Learn skills that will help support your transition to climbing outside. We can’t teach you everything you need to know to climb outdoors, but can help you get started. As a bonus, some of these skills help with indoor climbing too!

  • Outdoor Development: Sport Climbing Outside

Interested in moving your sport climbing outdoors? This three-hour indoor class will provide hands-on experience with best practices for single-pitch sport climbing, including clipping bolts, building anchors, cleaning an anchor, and lowering. This class does not teach how to lead belay or lead climb (see Intro to Sport Lead for learning to lead belay and lead climb).

    Price: $95 | Member Price: $80

  • Outdoor Development: Self Rescue Single Pitch

This is one of our most important and intensive indoor courses. If you climb outside at all or are just interested in learning new rope skills, this class is for you! Each 3.5-hour class covers a range of topics, from the basics of friction hitches and anchors, and into top-managed rescues and hauling systems.

Session 2 will build upon the skills learned in Week 1, by diving into lowering from above, basic haul systems, and escaping a belay.

Prerequisites: Lead Belay Check. Experience belaying outdoors at a minimum. Exposure to outdoor single-pitch climbing is helpful, as many skills will reference outdoor rescue scenarios.
